# Microsoft 365 Access Remediation: How DETOX Fixes Risk Faster

- Microsoft 365 Access Remediation: How DETOX Fixes Risk Faster

A Microsoft 365 access audit always produces the same result: a list of identified risks, with no guarantee any of it gets fixed. The real bottleneck isn't the audit. **It's remediation**.

Manually fixing hundreds, sometimes thousands, of excessive shares across SharePoint, OneDrive, and Teams quickly outpaces what any IT team can handle, no matter how well staffed. Remediation speed depends on who's doing the fixing, not on how good your audit tool is.

That's the principle behind [DETOX® for M365](https://info.idecsi.com/detox-m365?hsLang=en): swap centralized, manual correction for distributed remediation, routed straight to the right owners, running in parallel across the entire tenant.

This changes how you should read any M365 access security project. The question isn't just "what are our risks." It's "who actually fixes them, and how fast."

## Why an Audit Alone Doesn't Fix Anything

[An access audit](https://blog.idecsi.com/review-rights-microsoft365?hsLang=en) delivers a precise picture: sites with no owner, active anonymous links, Microsoft 365 groups full of stale members. That diagnostic work matters, and plenty of organizations stop right there.

An audit report, however detailed, **fixes nothing by itself**. Someone still has to triage every line, track down the right person, confirm whether access is still legitimate, then actually act on the tenant.

On a tenant with hundreds of users, that work adds up to hundreds of hours if one IT team has to handle it centrally, line by line. That's exactly why so many access audits sit unused months after delivery.

Here's a concrete example. An audit flags 2,000 risky shares on a 1,000-user tenant. Without a remediation mechanism built for scale, a two or three-person IT team would need months to work through them one at a time, assuming they even have the bandwidth alongside everything else on their plate.

The gap between an audit that actually changes a tenant's security posture and a report that sits in a drawer comes down entirely to this remediation step, which rarely gets the same attention as the diagnostic phase.

## Why Fully Automated Remediation Falls Short

Several approaches on the market frame remediation as a purely technical problem: an engine flags risky access and revokes it automatically, with no human in the loop.

That logic works fine on clear-cut cases, like a disabled account that still holds active access. It gets riskier the moment judgment calls are involved, like whether a broad share is actually legitimate.

An algorithm doesn't know that a widely shared folder is an HR communication space, deliberately open to everyone. It doesn't know that access granted two years ago still gets used weekly by an active project team.

**Only the actual owner of that access** has that business context. That's exactly why DETOX hands the fix decision to the user who owns it, instead of applying a uniform automated rule across the whole tenant.

## The Distributed Remediation Model

DETOX starts from a simple premise: whoever owns an access grant is always the best judge of whether it's still legitimate. IT has no way of knowing why someone still has access to a folder three years later.

The platform routes that correction decision to each affected user through the MyDataSecurity interface. Everyone gets a notification scoped to their own risky shares, never a generic tenant-wide list to work through.

In practice, each employee sees a short, personal list: access they granted, or own, flagged as potentially risky. They confirm, fix, or remove it in a few clicks, from their own dashboard.

IT keeps full control over the campaign itself: scope definition, completion tracking by team, real-time progress dashboards. This stays an "**IT orchestrates, users remediate**" model, not a hands-off delegation with no oversight.

This split changes the math entirely. Instead of one IT team working through thousands of lines one by one, hundreds of users each fix a handful of access grants, in parallel, the same day.

## Zero Setup, Zero Training on the IT Side

One point needs stating clearly, because it's easy to misread. "Zero IT burden" doesn't mean IT sits out of the process. It means IT has **nothing to deploy or configure** to launch a campaign.

IDECSI operates DETOX end to end: no infrastructure to stand up on your side, no technical configuration upfront, no training required for your IT team before a campaign kicks off.

What IT keeps is strategic oversight, not the operational burden of deployment. That distinction matters. It's the difference between "zero implementation lift" and "zero role in access governance," two very different things.

For a CIO, the concrete argument is this: a DETOX campaign launches without pulling engineering or integration resources internally, and without a configuration sprint delaying your first results by weeks.

The platform is ready to go from the initial checkup, with no setup phase that would otherwise push the start date back, something that's common with tools requiring heavy integration work.

## How a Campaign Runs, Week by Week

A DETOX campaign runs **four to six weeks total**, split into two distinct phases. The first phase, the checkup, takes one to two weeks and requires no IT action beyond validating the initial scope.

During this phase, IDECSI scans the full tenant and builds a risk map: ownerless sites, anonymous links, groups with external members, overly broad sharing configurations. Every risk gets tied to an identified owner, not just flagged in a generic report.

The second phase, correction, runs two to three weeks. Each user gets a personalized notification listing only their own risky access, and fixes it directly through MyDataSecurity, with no IT support ticket required.

IT tracks progress in real time through a dashboard: correction rates by team, by risk type, by status. At the end of the campaign, a final report measures the actual gains and flags which teams need a targeted follow-up push.

This four-to-six-week rhythm, repeatable roughly every six months, turns a one-off security cleanup into a measurable governance routine, without ever asking IT to configure anything again.

## What a DETOX Campaign Actually Fixes

According to the official DETOX for M365 product sheet, the three most common remediation types in a campaign are removing access that's no longer legitimate, changing the owner, and deleting active anonymous shares.

These three categories cover most of the risky situations flagged during the initial checkup: individual access grants never revoked after a role change, Microsoft 365 sites with no active owner, and open sharing links with no authentication required.

The checkup itself runs on a full tenant map: the state of Microsoft 365 groups, external users present on sensitive spaces, and a global view of sharing configurations across the tenant.

The latest version of the platform adds data classification through metadata analysis, which sharpens risk prioritization coming out of the checkup. An [overshared folder holding sensitive data](https://blog.idecsi.com/microsoft-365-data-exposure?hsLang=en) doesn't get the same priority as an overshared folder full of generic resources.

This classification layer lets you focus remediation effort where real exposure is highest, instead of treating every risky situation with the same level of urgency regardless of what it actually exposes.

## Results From Real Campaigns

According to IDECSI data (2026), DETOX campaigns run across more than one million users deliver an average of **7 remediations per user** on the first campaign alone, across industries.

At Cergy-Pontoise Agglomeration, the first campaign removed 50% of identified risks. The second campaign, run a few months later on the same scope, **removed 70%**, according to IDECSI data (2026) measured on that specific customer.

That jump between two consecutive campaigns makes a key point: distributed remediation isn't a one-time fix. Each new campaign starts from a baseline the previous one already cleaned up, which is exactly why correction rates climb from one campaign to the next instead of staying flat.

At [BPCE Infogérance](https://blog.idecsi.com/resources-customer/idecsi-case-study-bpce-it?hsLang=en), distributed remediation delivered **more than 36,000 corrections**, with user participation above 55%, according to IDECSI data (2026) measured on that customer.

That participation rate confirms something important: self-service correction doesn't feel like extra work to users. Each person only sees what's actually theirs to fix, not a generic tenant-wide backlog.

At [Abeille Assurances](https://blog.idecsi.com/m365-oversharing-remediation-detox-results-2026?hsLang=en), the DETOX campaign covered 4,841 users, 4,445 of whom had at least one point of attention to review. Nearly 46% of them opened their MyDataSecurity dashboard, and 96% of opened notification emails led to an action, according to Abeille Assurances' case study.

*"In six weeks, six out of ten points of attention were closed. Everything was decided and fixed by employees: no tickets, no scripts, no action from IT teams."*

Guillaume Perrin, Abeille Assurances

The campaign tackled security and digital sustainability in a single approach, and the financial target set on data volume was met. Four factors drove the result: joint sponsorship from IT leadership, the CISO, and the CSR team; communication co-built with internal comms (personalized emails, intranet, on-site screens); user accountability; and remediation with zero IT intervention, with IT effort focused on scoping and oversight.

The work doesn't stop there: new shares appear every day, and 2,747 findings remain open. For its second campaign, Abeille Assurances plans to target non-participants earlier, anticipate the retention rules that block some fixes, plan bulk remediation for the remaining sensitive items, and feed the metrics into its CISO and CSR dashboards.

That recurring campaign logic, more than the initial cleanup itself, is what builds lasting digital hygiene on a Microsoft 365 tenant, well beyond a one-off cleanup ahead of a project.

## The Bottom Line

Remediation, not the audit, decides whether an M365 access security project delivers a measurable result. A sharp diagnostic with no capacity to fix things at scale stays a report with zero real impact on the tenant.

DETOX puts that fixing capacity in the hands of the right owners, without asking IT to deploy or configure anything, while keeping IT fully in control of the campaign from start to finish.

Three things sum up the method: users who fix what they actually know, IT that steers without deploying, and a recurring rhythm that turns a one-off cleanup into a governance routine.

## Q&A

Q1: What is Microsoft 365 access remediation?

Remediation refers to actually correcting access risks identified during an audit, such as removing an anonymous sharing link, revoking outdated access rights, or changing a site owner. Remediation takes place after the assessment and complements it rather than replacing it.

Q2: How do I remediate M365 permissions without a huge IT lift?

Users directly remediate their own sharing permissions through the MyDataSecurity interface. IT teams remain in control of the campaign, including its scope, monitoring and dashboards, and can also perform remediation at scale.

Q3: How long does a DETOX remediation campaign take?

A DETOX campaign typically runs for 4 to 6 weeks. Following an assessment of the Microsoft 365 tenant, users receive a personalized report and can remediate identified issues directly in MyDataSecurity. Follow-up reminders are also scheduled throughout the campaign.

Q4: Does IT need to configure anything before launching a DETOX campaign?

Deployment is quick and lightweight: IT simply needs to grant the IDECSI platform application the required permissions within the Microsoft 365 tenant.

Q5: What is the difference between an access rights audit and remediation?

An audit identifies and documents access risks without correcting them. Remediation takes action on those risks by removing or adjusting the relevant access permissions. The two steps are complementary but serve distinct purposes.
